Alvin “Big Al” Carl Dockweiler, Sr., 73, of La Grande, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at his residence. At his request, there will not be a memorial service. Instead, a small gathering of friends and family will take place to celebrate Alvin’s life on Saturday, August 10th, 2019 at 10:00a.m. at Riverside Park in La Grande.

Alvin, also known as “Al”, “Big Al” and “Poppie”, was born on September 11, 1945, in La Grande, Oregon to Johnnie and Jane (Hallgarth) Dockweiler. He spent most of his life living in the Grande Ronde Valley but also lived some of his younger years in Dallas, Oregon. As a child, Al lived near the lake in the watershed up Ladd Canyon while his father served as the local caretaker. This spot remained one of Alvin’s favorite places throughout his life.

Al attended Greenwood Elementary and La Grande Middle School. He married Sandi Harrison and they had several wonderful children together. They later divorced. In 1986, Al married Jessica Willis and they were married for 32 years. He loved her with all his heart.

Al worked as a body fender technician at numerous auto body shops around La Grande. He can be credited for teaching many relatives their skill and trade in auto body work. One of the highlights of Al’s week was taking care of grandchildren Carson and Colten. They would joke, talk and dream about how Carson will fix-up an old truck that he bought. Al also enjoyed archery hunting, fishing, camping, taking long drives in the mountains and wildlife sightseeing. Al was a wonderful grandfather who cherished his grandchildren. He loved to tease them with jokes and pranks. These memories, along with times spent with family and friends at elk camp, were his favorite things to reminisce about.

Al is survived by his wife, Jessica; children, Jody Dockweiler of Salem, OR, Alvin Dockweiler II, John Dockweiler, Jennifer Gentleman (Kevin), Cody Anderson (Keisha), Ken Chrusoskie (Cynthia), Pamela Scott (Jeff), Stephanie Neaves all of La Grande, OR, Michael Neaves (Sara) of Omaha, NE and Sally Neaves of La Grande, OR; sisters, Sharen Levinsen of White Rock, B.C. and Carolyn Crader (Bob) of La Grande; brothers, Linn Dockweiler (Rhonda) of La Grande, OR and Van Dockweiler (Pauline) of Central Point, OR; 35 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; aunt Reta Hallgarth and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by parents, Johnnie and Jane; his previous wife, Sandi Harrison-Spence; sister, Shannon Sloan; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Nick Bradley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 4th Street, La Grande, OR 97850 to help with funeral expenses.
