Charles Nelson Hewitt, 83, of Island City, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Grande Ronde Hospital. No service is planned at this time.

Charles was born on June 5, 1935 in Glasgow, Montana to Clifford and Bertha (Pischke) Hewitt. He moved around the Pacific Northwest before settling in Richland, OR to raise his family. He spent his retirement years in La Grande, OR. He married Dolores Vessel on April 12, 1969 in Springfield, OR. Charles also served our country while in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea for the clean-up after the Korean War, 1958-1960.

Charles had various jobs before finding a career with truck driving. He drove for a redimix company and long haul before retiring. He had a pilot’s license and owned his own airplane for numerous years. He collected corvairs (vans, cars, anything corvair).

Charles is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughter, Melonie Towell (Craig) of Terrebonne, OR; step-children, Tim Vessel of La Grande, OR, Rebecca Butler (Jim) of Baker City, OR, Leila Bashans (Fred) of Port Orchard, WA, and Scott Vessel of Moses Lake, WA; sisters, Mary Stone of Reedsport, OR, Ellie Hawksworth (Dick) of Boise, ID, Bertha (Sundae) Kasey of Boise, ID and Stella Kash (Allen) of Oregon City, OR; brother, Ray Hewitt (Janet) of Corvallis, OR; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and 7 nieces or nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Bertha and brother, Clarence Hewitt.
