Obituary

Christina "Chris" Margarethe Dowdy, long-time resident of La Grande, Oregon, passed away on May 30, 2019. Christina’s funeral service will be held on Monday, June 10, 2019 at Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth Street, La Grande, at 11:00.

Christina was born in Newberg, Oregon, on August 16, 1926, to Ernest Heinrich Seidel and Margarethe Sarah Seidel. Both her parents and her brother, Heinrich Seidel, preceded her in death. She attended public schools in Newberg, and after graduating high school, she moved to Portland, Oregon, where she attended business college. Upon graduation with her Associates degree, she obtained a job in Portland with Allis Chalmers as a bookkeeper. Shortly thereafter, she met her future husband, William Carrington Dowdy, who was a dental student.

Chris and Bill (who preceded her in death) were married on July 21, 1947, and after his graduation from dental school moved to La Grande, Oregon in 1951. They had six children: Judith, Kathryn, Nancy, Richard, Patricia, and Steven.

Throughout her life, Chris not only had her children to keep her busy, but she also had numerous hobbies and interests. She was an avid seamstress, knitter, cross-stitcher and crafter. Many of her handmade Christmas ornaments still grace the families’ Christmas trees and several of her hand-stitched quilts contain the material left over from all the clothing she sewed. She took pride in canning and preserving food and her descendants continue that tradition today.

Her faith in God and her church, the United Methodist Church, was extremely important to her. In her life, family and the church were her two greatest priorities.

She loved watching sports on TV and was a rabid Blazer and Mariners fan. She loved attending any sporting event that her children and grandchildren were in, whether it was football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, wrestling, or swimming. She was often the loudest fan for the teams, much to her youngsters’ embarrassment. She loved the arts and music and took every opportunity to pass that passion on to her children.

Christina is survived by her daughter, Judith Schwenk (Daniel) of Eagle, Idaho; her daughter, Kathryn Eggers (Ron) of Lake Oswego, Oregon; her daughter, Nancy Schassen (John) of La Pine, Oregon; her son, Richard Dowdy (Jamie) of Canby, Oregon; her daughter, Patricia Dyer (Baxter) of Bend, Oregon; and her son, Steven Dowdy (Teresa) of La Grande, Oregon. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
