Gary Leroy “Sully” Sullivan, 78, of La Grande, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019, at a care facility in Pendleton. Gary was born on January 23, 1941, in Boise, Idaho to James and Virginia (Rhodes) Sullivan. Gary was the first child born into the family. He spent most of his growing up years in Boise, ID, graduating from Borah High School and later, graduated from Boise Junior College with a drafting degree. He served our country while in the United States Navy for two years. Gary and Barbara Ann Wheeler were married on June 27, 1964. They were married for 47 years. They lived in Sand Point and Coeur d’ Alene, ID and most of their years together were spent living in La Grande, OR.

Gary was employed by GTE Telephone Service for 27 years. During which time he received several company awards. Gary loved his family, friends, pets, especially cats, birds and small-town living. He was a founding member of the “Rusty Wheel Car Club.” He had a love for old cars and spent many hours restoring them. Wherever Gary lived, his yard was full of old cars and beautiful rock gardens. He had a dream of building a bird sanctuary. Gary drew up plans and always hoped he’d win the lottery to build his “Shadowwing.” He supported Barbara and the kid’s involvement in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Cursillo. And last but not least, Gary loved to “scrounge,” always looking for a good bargain, car parts and trinkets. He created beautiful gift boxes and filled them from his “scrounge” for his family. He also enjoyed watching football and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his son, John (Susan) Sullivan of Nampa; daughters, JoAnna (Marc) Durrant of Bend, Janice (Alan) Wilks of Pendleton, and Jennifer (Bob) Fossek of Pendleton; grandchildren, John (Danielle) Sullivan, Sean (Denise) Sullivan, Stevie (Kodey) Miller, Cassidy (Carly) Driggers, Chelsey Driggers, Alivia Durand, Robert (Brosnan) Fossek II, Jared Fossek, Makayla Fossek, Samantha and Abigail Wilks; many great grandchildren; sister, Linda (Dennis Meyers) Truman; nephews and niece, James (Lynette) Daniel (Roween,) Jonathan (Karlie) Truman and Amy (Jeff) Truman Gowans; sister-in-laws: MaryAnn Wheeler and Dusty Sullivan and cousin, Melvina (Stan) Haynes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents, James and Virginia; brother, James W. Sullivan and in-laws, Tom and Neva Wheeler.
