Joseph W. Larson of Union died peacefully on June 24, 2019 at the LaGrande Post Acute Rehabilitation Center. A service at the Union Cemetery will be held July 12th at 10:00 A.M. A celebration of life will be held at the Union Stockshow Hall, 760 East Delta Ave. in Union after the service. Please bring finger foods and your choice of beverage.
Joe was born October 27, 1939 in Portland, Oregon. He joined the Coast Guard in 1957 and served proudly for four years. He returned to Portland and had his own sanitation service for some time. His lifelong dream was to serve in law enforcement, and when former Baker County Sheriff Delmar Dixon called him in 1970, he moved from Portland to Baker City to become a Deputy Sheriff.
He married Wanda Dima on April 7th, 1972 and they transferred to Halfway where Joe served as resident Deputy Sheriff. In 1975 he accepted a position as Security Supervisor for Eastern Oregon University, and continued in this career for 24 years.
Through the years Joe and Wanda enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with their combined 6 children, and he always brought his great sense of humor with him. After retirement they worked as camp hosts at Anthony Lakes, Mud Lake, Phillips Lake and Grande Ronde Lake Campgrounds.
Joe like to do woodworking, making furniture and cabinets, as well as his most notable creations of intricate ships and submarines carved out of wood. He also liked setting up elaborate Lionel train sets.
He loved to drive in the mountains and would tell Wanda, “I wonder where that road goes? We’re going to find out someday.” The next time they would find out where that road meandered. Joe and Wanda did everything together, enjoying nearly 48 years of marriage.
His parents Harry and Agnes Larson, and a sister June Howard preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Wanda, his sister Joyce Peasley, his son’s Tracy, Dave, (Linda), and Jim (Lora). His daughter Sherry Laber (Randy), his stepson and stepdaughter John Dima (Rhonda) and Linda Dima Larson. Grandchildren, David Larson Ammons, Jarred and Hope Ritchie, Shelby Laber, Dexter and Lexie Larson and step grandchildren Josh, Nick and Chris Rush and Dennis, Amber and Ashley Dima. He had 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
