Lois M. Boenig, 97, of La Grande, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Meridian, Idaho. No service is planned at this time.
Lois was born on March 19, 1921 in Springfield, Oregon to Glenn and Dora (Burch) Neilsen. She resided in Marcola, OR and La Grande, OR. She attended Marcola grade school and graduated from Marcola High School. She later attended Oregon University. She married William L. “Bill” Stoneberg until his passing and later married Eric Boenig.
Lois was employed as a waitress and nurse, but she was primarily a stay-at-home mother. She enjoyed arts and crafts, knitting and rug making. She won many 1st place awards for her rugs and poetry at Union Co. and Malheur Co. Fairs. She played women’s basketball and her team won the Mythical Allstar Team Lane Co. “B” League basketball championship in 1937 & 1938 and also played Lacrosse while at University of Oregon. She was a member of the Eastern Star, button Club, Garden Club and Grange “Oregon Trail”.
Lois is survived by her children; Knute Stoneberg (Kay) of La Grande, OR, Neil Stoneberg (Joyce) of Portland, OR, Karen Glenn (Larry) of Nyssa, OR and Betty Ann Vonderhellen (Ron) of Central Point, OR; sister, Jean Brown (Bob) and brother, Bill Neilsen; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Stoneberg; husband, Eric Boenig; brothers, Alton Neilsen, and Terry Neilsen and Robert Boenig.
