Marjorie “Marge” Ellen Thompson, 97, of La Grande, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2019 at a local care facility. No Service is planned at this time.
Marge, daughter of Carl and Mazie Hoefer (deceased) was born on July 4, 1921, in Doniphan. MO. She was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State College with a Bachelor’s degree in education, and received a Master’s degree in education from Columbia University in New York, NY. She was a high school teacher in history and physical education in Cairo, IL; Cape Girardeau, MO, Molalla OR, and Portland OR. In addition, she taught in Japan at various military bases during the occupation in Japan. While in Japan, she met and a married John. D. Thompson, and they re-located to Oregon, where they both were teachers. During that time, they had three children. John later became a dentist and bought a practice in La Grande, OR. John passed in 1972.
Marge was an outstanding tennis player in high school and competed in that sport in both high school and college. She had interests in golf, travel and painting; and enjoyed time with grandchildren and with her longtime friends.
Marge is survived by her children; Dennis Thompson (Kathy) of Thornton, CO, Thomas Thompson of La Grande OR, and Patti Kaye Pihlaja (Graydon) of New Canaan, CT and three grandchildren, Amy Thompson of Brooklyn, NY, Tyler Thompson of Tempe AZ, and Emily Pihlaja of Seattle WA. She is also survived by 6 of her 8 siblings; Mary Nenninger of Cape Girardeau, MO, Jack Hoefer of Knoxville, TN. Joe Hoefer of Doniphan, MO, Shirley Whitelock of Eureka, MO, Martha Hoefer of Eureka, MO, and Rosie Smith of Springfield, IL.
