Mildred Beatrice Davis, 92, of La Grande, passed peacefully away on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Grande Ronde Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at the La Grande United Methodist Church, 4th and Spring, on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 11:00 am. Casual dress is preferred. Memories will be shared over a potluck lunch following the service.
Mildred was born on December 8, 1926 in Logan, Oklahoma to Edward H. and Edyth (Baggerly) McVicker. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland, OR in 1944. She married Earnest Earl Davis on January 13, 1946 in Kalama, Washington. They then moved to the Boise area for Earl to attend Barber School.
Mildred and Earl moved to Vale, OR in 1949 and moved to Gresham, Oregon in 1961 and then to Estacada, Oregon. They divorced in 1984. Mildred moved to Vancouver, Washington, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Kent, Washington, Toledo, Oregon before finally moving to La Grande, Oregon in 2002.
Mildred was a talented hard working woman, employed in many highly varied assignments, such as; sorting potatoes, bookkeeper for various businesses, and multiple manufacturing jobs. Upon retiring, she took care of her mother for 2 years, and subsequently extended that care to other aging members of her family. She did temporary work into her 70’s, which she loved. She really enjoyed working with people of other ethnicities and learning of their customs and cultures.
Among her hobbies, Mildred loved gardening, always favoring a big one to tend. She also excelled at canning, making clothes for her family and her grandchildren. Beyond that, Mildred also achieved a high reputation for her baking of bread and particularly her fruit pies. She was a long-term member of Eastern Star for more than 70 years. At her passing, Mildred was still an active member of the La Grande Hope Chapter of Eastern Star. She was an active member of the La Grande United Methodist Church, contributing her many skills in serving others.
Mildred is survived by her 3 children: Earlene Lamb (Mike) of La Grande, OR, Charlene Phinney (Bryan) of Puyallup, WA and William H. (Bill) Davis of Portland, OR; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families, whom she loved like her own. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings and her grandson, James Phinney.
