Robert Mark Upward, age 65, of La Grande, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Pasco, WA. A Memorial Service will be held at the La Grande Episcopal Church on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 2:00pm.
Robert was born on June 30, 1953 in McCook, Nebraska, a son of the late Wayne and Iris (Fudge) Upward. He was raised in Arapahoe, NE and attended Arapahoe public schools.
On 26 July, 1980, Robert was united in marriage to Stormie L. Cramer at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Arapahoe. With this union, they raised three children.
Robert was a member of the Arapahoe Boy Scouts and served as an acolyte for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he was a member. He played the drums in the Arapahoe High School band and also in a group band during their spare time. He played football, basketball and participated in track by throwing the discus and the shot put. In his senior year, he qualified for the State Track Meet in the discus.
After graduation, he attended Hastings Technical College in Hastings, Nebraska, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology. He then returned to Arapahoe to join his dad in the family business, Upward and Son’s Conoco Service Station. Robert then became the Deputy Sheriff for Furnas County and later became the Chief of Police for Arapahoe. After moving to Oregon, he served as the Chief of Police in Elgin for a year before moving to La Grande and finished his working career at Boise Cascade until retirement in 2003.
Robert enjoyed spending his time outside hunting, fishing, camping, and riding horses. During the day you would find him working in his woodshop and watching old western television shows. During football season he would never miss a Husker football game.
Robert is survived by his wife, Stormie; children Jeff Upward of Cheyenne, WY, Matt Upward (Nat) currently stationed in Virginia, and Tiffany Upward of La Grande, OR; siblings, sister Elizabeth Hendricks (Dave) of Arapahoe, NE; brother, John Upward (Pam) of Fort Worth, TX; 6 grandchildren, Benjamin Upward, Natalie Upward, Lauren Upward, Trinity Rollins, Lindsey Upward, and Mylee Rollins; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Iris.
