Verda Kathlyn Harmon, 72, of La Grande, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at a local care facility. A celebration of life will be held at the Oregon Coast at a later date.
She was born in Harper, Oregon on the kitchen table to Albert and Arrietta Olsen on March 11, 1946. Verda was blessed with a very large, blended family. She attended school in Harper and Elgin, Oregon. She married Nathan Kennedy and had two daughters, Sandee and Cindy. She later divorced and married Dick Harmon and gained another daughter, Pamela Scott. They lived several places over the years including Hermiston and LaGrande.
She had a variety of occupations - waitress, housekeeper, pilot car driver, and a commercial truck driver. She loved to crochet; make ceramics, quilts, and redwood clocks; and take trips to the Oregon Coast, especially with her grandkids. She was a phenomenal cook and loved to share her treats with family and friends. She lived for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and took any opportunity she could to spoil them. She spent time teaching them how to cook some of her special recipes like fry bread.
Anyone that knew her would say she was spunky and had a wicked sense of humor. She grew very fond of her caregivers and the family will treasure the stories they shared of her antics while residing in the Memory Care Unit at Wildflower Lodge in La Grande. Alzheimer’s took her away from her family way too soon, but she will forever live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, family, and close friends.
She is survived by her daughters Sandee Kennedy of Stanfield, Cindy Lowman (Keith) of Lynden, WA, and Pamela Scott (Jeff) of LaGrande; Siblings Anita, Charles, Donald, Etta, Gene, George, Gordon, Jack, John, Joyce, Marilyn, Mary, Maxine, Patty, Penny, Roberta, and Tomie. She has10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren who adored her. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and her siblings Diana, Duane, and Larry.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been set up at Umpqua Bank (c/o Pamela Scott, Acct Ending 2733) or contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
